The Vital Role of Vitamin K2 and Bone Health

Everyone is familiar with the effects of calcium, and how it helps bones stay strong. Few people recognize how beneficial vitamin K2 is for bone health however. Vitamin K2 is an important vitamin that helps bones stay strong. It is also important for improving heart health.

Vitamin K has been around for a long time. K2 helps with calcium absorption, regulating how calcium is regulated in the body, and helping to prevent osteoporosis as well as certain types of diseases that can form in the body.

Vitamin K comes as K1 a substance known as phylloquinone, and K2, or menaquinone, which you can find in organ meats, egg yolks and some dairy products. These two vitamins work in conjunction with one another to keep the body working properly.

Vitamin K is important for the liver to help it creating clotting proteins, so that the body does not bleed out. K is also important for bone health; it helps the bones maintain the right amount of calcium and helps keep calcium out of the arteries, which is important for blood flow in the body.

Most people look at vitamin K in terms of how much they need for proper blood clotting, rather than how much vitamin K then need for proper calcium and bone health. That means that most people are usually not getting enough vitamin K in their diet.

K2 can restore bone health, making it a very important vitamin for individuals that may have osteoporosis. Individuals that eat high levels of vitamin K2 may have less osteoporosis and bone fractures than individuals who eat relatively little vitamin K2. Studies of individuals living in Japan showed that in high dose trials of those taking K2 significant bone density results were achieved. Some studies even show that K2 may be as good or work better than prescription vitamins for improving bone health.
