The Nutrients

What is nutrition? Nutrition is the provision of materials, in the form of food, to cells and organisms to support life. In order to be healthy, we need a wide array of nutrients in a wide array of foods. In fact, scientists have found over 40 different nutrients in food that are essential for our grown and also to keep the processes and chemical reactions essential for live going.

Nutrients are usually classified in six different major classes: carbohydrates, fats, minerals, protein, vitamins, and water. These six nutrients are also grouped into two classes: macronutrients and micronutrients. Carbohydrates, proteins, and fats and water are grupoed into macronutrients, while vitamins and minerals are grouped into micronutrients.

The main difference between micronutrients and macronutrients is amount that the body needs of each. For instance, the body needs a relatively larger amount of macronutrients than micronutrients. Macronutrients provide structural material and energy. Minerals and vitamins, on the other hand, do not provide energy for the body to use.

In our day to day life, our bodies use some of our stores of these essential nutrients and thus it is important to constantly replenish these stores of nutrients. Indeed, our body's make up is impressive. It consists of chemical compounds such water, carbohydrates, amino acids, fatty acids, nucleic acids. In turn, these chemical compounds are made out of elements, like carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, calcium, iron, zinc, manganese, and many others. In order to keep the body working properly, the body uses the processes of ingestion, digestion, absorption  metabolism, transport, and storage, and excretion of these nutrients.

As part of these blog, we seek to learn more about the nutrients our body needs, the processes behind nutrition, and much more.
